How do I know if my lawn has compaction?

If your lawn has thin areas of grass, drains poorly, or even if it just struggles to grow throughout the year, then there is a good chance that it is suffering from a soil compaction problem.

What causes compaction?

Foot traffic, poor lawn mowing and even gravity and rain causes compaction on your lawn. This pushing together of the top layer of soil reduces the ability of air, water and nutrients to penetrate through into the root zone. This has an adverse effect on the quality and visual appearance of your lawn.

There is a solution... aeration!

Hollow tine aeration is an effective treatment for severe compaction problems. Hollow tine aeration physically removes small cylindrical lengths of soil known as cores, allowing it to relax and breathe, creating tiny cracks in the ground below through which air, water and nutrients flow, helping to strengthen the grass root system.

Benefits of hollow-tine aerating

It loosens the soil, improving drainage.

Increases the rooting depth of the grass, which in turn strengthens it.

Increases the rate at which soil breaks down thatch.

It improves the effectiveness of fertilisation.

It is one of the most beneficial treatments that can be done to your lawn.

Is there any preparation needed before hollow tine aeration takes place?

No none. Just make sure the lawn has had a cut about a week before treatment takes place so that the cores of soil can be removed more easily.

How long does the hollow tine aeration process take?

This is dependant on the size of your lawn and the severity of the compaction in your lawn.

Can the lawn be used again straight after hollow tining?

So long as the lawn does not require further treatment then you are free to use your lawn again straight away.
